Vivid Pink Diamond Ring Breaks Records at Christie’s Hong Kong Sale

A 5.00-carat cushion-shaped fancy vivid pink diamond ring set not one, but two, world auction records at Christie’s Jewels sale in Hong Kong Tuesday. The potentially flawless, type IIa vivid pink diamond sold for HK$83,540,000 (US$10.78 million).

At US$2.1 million per carat, it has set two auction records - for highest price per carat for a diamond as well as the highest price for a pink diamond.

Bought by a private Asian buyer, the stone sold well above its estimated value of HK$39 million – HK$55 million (US$5 million – US $7 million).

“Eight out of the ten most expensive jewels were acquired by discerning Asian private collectors, confirming once again Hong Kong’s position as a major market for the finest gemstones,” said Vickie Sek, director of Christie’s Asia jewelry and jadeite department.

Overall, 89 percent of the lots were sold, at a total of HK$372 million (US$48 million).
