The GJEPC Commissions Global Gems and Jewelry Report

May 17, 06 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

The Indian Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has commissioned global consulting firm KPMG to conduct a comprehensive study on the global gems and Jewelry industry. The report is to be named “The GJEPC-KPMG Global Gems and Jewellery Report 2006.”

Given the increasingly global nature of the industry and its constituents, KPMG proposes to carry out an in-depth study of the industry covering constituents from across the value chain.

The aim of the study is to analyze the impact of events that may substantially affect the industry in the near future. The study design includes analysis of data and current trends, quantitative modeling to understand the impact of various factors as well as building predictive scenarios and the resultant end-state of the industry.

Gems and Jewelry Value Chain - Key issues and Challenges

Specific objectives of this study include:

  • To collate reliable data on the gems and jewelry value chain for its key constituents: diamonds, gold jewelry, colored gem stones, and platinum.
  • To foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by various players in each of these segments and the corresponding strategies adopted by them.
  • To identify key trends affecting the global industry and use these to develop possible scenarios which could change the structure of the industry.
  • To use these scenarios to identify strategic responses that could be made by players in each part of the industry value chain to overcome the impact of these scenarios.

KPMG proposes carrying out the study using a mix of analysis based on secondary sources supplemented by insights drawn through a series of meetings with industry leaders from across the value chain.

  • Secondary research: Data will be analyzed and used to identify key trends affecting the industry value chain. These will be used to form hypothesis on potential scenarios likely to change the industry landscape
  • Meetings with industry leaders: KPMG will validate the hypotheses formed as part of the analysis, through structured meetings with select representatives from the industry. KPMG will also capture their responses to possible scenarios affecting the industry.

Study Report

The key issues identified during the study will be presented in the form of a printed report, to be circulated within the industry covering the following:

  • Summary of key issues facing the industry across the value chain
  • Success stories and case-studies of key players in each part of the value chain
  • Forecasting of the future size of the industry across various constituents of the value chain, including various scenarios
  • Critical imperatives for achieving the industry size
  • Impact on major countries including India
  • Views of industry participants across the value chain on each of the above
  • A vision and agenda for transformation for various industry stakeholders

The report is expected to be released in the next eight to 12 weeks.
