U.S. E-Commerce Spending +23% in Q2

July 31, 07 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

ComScore released a report yesterday (Monday) on U.S. e-commerce spending for the second quarter of 2007, showing that retail e-commerce in the U.S. grew 23 percent to $27.2 billion, over last year’s $22.2 billion. Jewelry and watch sales grew 32 percent from the same period in 2006.

Total e-commerce spending, including travel, increased 19 percent to $47.5 billion during this period.

Online sales of accessories exploded, with the sales of video games, consoles and accessories posting the biggest increase of 159 percent.

Jewelry and watch sales growth outpaced a number of popular categories such as Music, Movies & Videos (24%), Computer Software (23%) and Books & Magazines (22%).

“Retail e-commerce rebounded solidly in the second quarter after a modest start to the year,” comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni said. “After posting 17 percent growth versus a year ago in the first quarter, retail e-commerce sales grew 23 percent year-over-year in the second quarter, matching the growth rates we’ve seen during the past couple of years.”

Total U.S. online consumer spending was $170.8 billion in 2006, with retail spending accounting for $102.1 billion. Based on first-half growth rates, U.S. online consumer spending is on track to total $200 billion in 2007.
