IDEX Online Poll: How Were The Holiday Weekend Sales? Not So Good

According to an IDEX Online poll, the holiday weekend sales were not that hot, with 38 percent of respondents reporting a small decline from last year. Broken into positive and negative responses, the results are an equal 50 / 50 split.

The latest IDEX Online poll asked its members ‘How were your sales this holiday weekend?’ Twelve percent responded “Fantastic - 10% or higher above last year”, 19 percent replied “Good – Above last year”, and another 19 percent opted for “OK - Same as last year”.

As stated above, 38 percent of respondents reported “A small decline from last year” and the remaining 12 percent suffered from “An absolute disaster - A nose dive from last year”.

How well does this reflect the situation in the market? Considering that an important force, the major U.S. retailers, tend to instruct their employees to refrain from answering such polls, it is safe to deduce that this does not reflect their sales, which are probably 2 - 4 percent above last year.

Online retailers are doing better then the majors, and independents are seeing the least growth over last year. The diamond pipeline, which supplies retailers, is probably affected according to clients: Blue Nile suppliers are happier than those supplying the Mom & Pops.
