JSA Warns Against Fraudulent Phone Orders

March 16, 08 by Edahn Golan

The Jewelers' Security Alliance (JSA) reported that it has identified a pattern of telephone orders to jewelry suppliers in which a person posing as a new customer uses counterfeit bank money orders to pre-pay for jewelry merchandise in the $1,500 range.

According to JSA, in one such case a person identifying himself as “Cliff Brewer” ordered six gold clasps on January 23 from a Los Angeles supplier. The person sent a Washington Mutual money order for $1,500. The merchandise was shipped after the check was deposited, and a few days later, the suspect called again and ordered six more clasps.

Again, the goods were shipped against a $1,500 money order. Both money orders were later returned marked “altered/fictitious.”

In another incident in New Mexico, the suspect telephoned a supplier on February 18 identifying himself as “Frank Wright,” with an address in Inglewood, CA. The suspect ordered gold and silver products in two different orders, one pre-paid with a $1,000 money order from Citibank, and one with a $1,500 money order from Washington Mutual, which had almost an identical serial number as in the Los Angeles case.

The goods were sent overnight, and both money orders were returned as fraudulent.

The JSA also described a third attempt in Dallas that failed.
