Japan imported 194,948 carats of polished diamonds worth $87.52 million in February, a 2.3 percent decline in value and a 14.4 percent drop in weight compared to February 2004. The downward drift seems to mark an annual trend, following the decrease in imports in January.
India continues to be the leading supplier, shipping $38 million worth of goods, representing over 43 percent of Japan's total polished imports, at an average of $275.8 per carat, and nearly 71 percent of goods by weight at 137,857 carats.
Belgium, the country’s second biggest supplier, sent 25,330 carats at an average of $833 p/c, for a total of $21.106 million, or about a quarter of February's imports.
Israeli goods averaged over $1,143 p/c with $14.636 million worth of goods weighing 12,803 carats.
