Moscow Prosecutor to Investigate Alrosa Embezzlement Charges

The Moscow Public Prosecutor’s office will investigate Alrosa's financial activities amid charges of embezzlement made by a former top manager, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office said Friday. The criminal investigation will examine asset management by the miner’s top brass as well as suspicions that 153 million rubles ($5.5 million) were embezzled.

According to Alrosa, it first heard of the investigation from media reports over the weekend, claiming it had not received any official inquiries from the Public Prosecutor’s Office and therefore could not comment on its statement.
The Russian daily Kommersant names Gamlet Akopyan, former head of Alrosa’s legal department, as the top manager that reported the embezzlement.
Alrosa said its economic and financial activities were “under constant control by relevant authorities”, and that it had been the subject of three audits by the Russian Federation Audit Chamber in the past two years.
“Alrosa is interested in having an unbiased investigation of the charges brought against it by the Moscow Public Prosecutor’s Office and willing to provide all the necessary information to achieve this,” the company’s press service said.
