NamGem Manager Arrested in Connection With $2.6M Theft
September 12, 10NamGem factory manager Erez Ben Shushan was released on bail of N$100,000 (US$14,000) on Wednesday after he was arrested by police as a suspect in the $2.6 million diamond theft from NamGem.
Ben Shushan, an Israeli citizen, appeared in the magistrate court of Okahandja on Wednesday. His passport was confiscated and he was ordered to report to the Okahandja police station three times a week.
The theft was discovered Monday morning when a safe that contained the diamonds was opened. The initial suspicion was that the theft was done with the help of, or by, an insider.
NamGem is a De Beers owned diamond polishing factory operated by U.S.-based Diamond Trading Company (DTC) Sightholder Lazare Kaplan International (LKI).
The missing goods included rough, semi-worked and polished diamonds.
