See Right Through You
May 23, 10When it comes to buying and selling polished diamonds at the wholesale level, it is vital to have access to real-time, transparent and unbiased pricing information. IDEX Online’s Diamond Prices and Index & Drivers objectively reflects market trends as they happen, giving buyers and sellers the important information they need to make informed business decisions.
What Are IDEX Online Diamond Prices?
With more than 1200 suppliers uploading their stock onto IDEX Online the IDEX Online diamond prices database is an extremely valuable resource for any diamantaire to use when buying and selling.
When a diamond is uploaded to the site with an asking price, its various characteristics are automatically added to the database.
By looking through the diamond prices database, users are able to search and view average asking prices for polished diamonds derived from inventories estimated at more than $4 billion.
Users can view average asking prices, see highs and lows, determine price history for the past three months and track supply and demand trends. All of which helps them optimize what they should be paying for a particular category of diamond if they are buying or what price they should be asking for if they are selling..

The prices can be viewed in standard color/clarity grids and searched according to Cut, Carat, Make (cut grade) and Certificate, allowing the user to customize their search making it as wide or as narrow as they like.
To ensure that the prices are a true reflection of average asking prices, automatic checks have been set in place to filter out any mistakes. This filtering mechanism was constructed with the help of financial experts and statisticians and not only keeps mistakes out of the system, but also makes manipulation attempts impossible.
In addition, the accuracy and transparency of the database is maintained since so many traders are constantly uploading their stock onto the trading platform, no one seller can influence the average asking price for the particular goods they may have in stock.
Once a buyer has done all their research about the particular diamond they are interested in, and received all the information to support their purchase, they can simply hit the “Go Trade” button and be taken from the diamond prices database straight to the trading floor.

What Are The Diamond Index and Drivers?
The Diamond Index and Diamond Drivers were formulated following comprehensive research and analysis of the IDEX inventory database, aggregated since February 2001. Research and development was conducted in cooperation with Dr. Avi Wohl, Senior Lecturer of Finance at the Faculty of Management,
With so many diamonds being uploaded onto the IDEX Online trading floor, and with the availability of so much valuable data, the next natural step was for IDEX Online to use the data to reflect the state of the global diamond market situation in a single composite. In other words, there is so much information contained in the inventories being uploaded into the IDEX Online trading floor that it is possible to use that information to see how prices are changing globally.
This single composite is known as the Diamond Index, dynamically derived from the 15 leading diamond categories of cut and carat – “15 leading” – in terms of $ value and frequency of trade, which together account for approximately 45 percent of the polished diamond trade. These 15 categories are known as the Diamond Drivers.
These 15 drivers are composed of 300 selected 4C’s stone profiles, based on highest percentage of market in terms of $ value, as well as top frequency level. In addition, the index for each driver is composed from a weighted average of its corresponding stone profiles, reflecting the market in a very accurate way.
The Diamond Index is updated every hour and the percentage of change is displayed with reference to the previous day’s closing time (24 EST).
