The anonymous buyer paid $1 million per carat for the diamond, in what can be described as a sizzling market. Demand for large and fancy color diamonds is pushing prices to record breaking levels.
Recently Christie’s sold a pink diamond for a record-breaking $23.1 million. In November, Sotheby’s sold a 24.78 carat diamond for $46.2 million, setting a world record for an auctioned diamond or jewel.
Other interesting lots sold at Christie’s yesterday include a 10.91 carats pear-shaped fancy intense pinkish-orange diamond ring that fetched $218,000 p/c, a 7.30 carats modified rectangular-cut fancy purple-pink diamond ring by Taffin that sold for $124,000 p/c and a 22.79 carats cushion-cut D / VS2 diamond ring that brought $124,000 p/c.
