Production at the underground mine began in early 2010, alongside open pit operations. The transition to a fully underground operation will be finished this year. The move underground is intended to extend Diavik’s mine life past 2020.
“The diamonds unearthed at Diavik are amongst the best white gem diamonds produced in the world today,” said Niels Kristensen, Diavik president and COO. “We have seen and continue to see, strong demand for Diavik diamonds in both established and emerging markets.”
Rio Tinto currently holds a 60 percent-share in the Diavik mine. The company is currently reviewing its involvement in the diamond industry, and is considering selling off its diamond assets, including its stake in Diavik. Harry Winston Diamond Corp. owns the remaining 40 percent of the mine.
