KP Chair, WDC Support Expansion of Definition of Conflict Diamonds
May 14, 12 (IDEX Online News) – The World Diamond Council has passed a resolution that supports expanding the definition of conflict diamonds to "Diamond related violence in rough diamond producing and trading areas." The language substantially expands the current definition of the Kimberley Process Core Documents from trade by rebelling forces.
The resolution follows a statement by KP Chair Ambassador Gillian A. Milovanovic, who earlier today stated her interest in updating the definition of conflict to reflect current concerns in the trade.
The WDC is meeting is part of the World Jewellery Forum underway in Vicenza, Italy.
Milovanovic said that violence does not have to equal overthrowing a government.
The resolution was welcomed by NGO Partnership Africa Canada (PAC).
