JVC Presents Wildlife Compliance Seminar
January 28, 13 (IDEX Online News) – The Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC), along with U.S. Fish and Wildlife agents will be presenting a seminar explaining the complex rules for incorporating protected materials into jewelry.
The “Managing the Menagerie: Compliant Use of Wildlife and Plant Products in Jewelry” seminar, which will take place during the upcoming AGTA Gemfair, will deal with issues surrounding the use of animal materials such as stingray, ivory, coral, abalone and tortoiseshell. It will also examine the documentation needed for the import and export of such goods.
JVC’s latest publication, The Essential Guide to The U.S. Trade in Materials From Plant and Wildlife Products will be made available at the seminar. The guide focuses on materials used in jewelry that have been classified by international, federal, and/or state laws as “endangered” or “threatened.”
JVC says that compliance with the legal standards outlined in the guide will protect vulnerable species and help industry members avoid enforcement actions. Violations of these laws can result in seizures or significant penalties, including costly fines and possible jail time.
The seminar will be held on February 8.
