Report: Zimbabwe Considers Candidacy for KP Chair
July 08, 15(IDEX Online News) – According to local media reports, Zimbabwe is considering a bid for the chairmanship of the Kimberley Process.
Mines and Minerals Development Minister Walter Chidhakwa said that as Zimbabwe has contributed to defending the reputation of the KP, and fully participated in committees, it should be entitled to stand for the position.
"It is a matter that we need to carefully consider. It is not out of line for us to submit a bid. We are full members of the KPCS and a proud member," said Chidhakwa, as reported in The Herald, Zimbabwe’s largest circulation newspaper.
Chidhakwa said that there was an understanding in the KPCS that if the chair was held by a diamond-producing country, then the vice chair should be held by a consumer country.
