SDA Terminates Membership of Dealer Trading in Undisclosed Synthetics
August 20, 15(IDEX Online News) – The Surat Diamond Association (SDA) has terminated the membership of a diamond manufacturer accused of dealing in undisclosed lab-grown diamonds.
In February, trader Chandu Sheta sold a parcel weighing 1.28 carats and consisting of 110 stones to two diamond merchants in Varachha’s Mini Bazaar diamond market. Unbeknownst to the two buyers, the parcel contained lab-grown diamonds mixed in with natural stones, reports the Times of India (TOI).
SDA officials voted unanimously yesterday (Wednesday) to terminate Sheta’s membership in the organization. This marks the first time that the SDA has terminated a trader’s membership, the paper reported.
"Sheta's membership has been terminated from the association,” said SDA president Dinesh Navadia. “This will set an example for others still doing illegal activity in the industry. This is a clear message to either stop or face action."
