Russian Rescuers Hunting For Missing ALROSA Miners After Water Floods Mine

August 06, 17 by Albert Robinson

(IDEX Online) – Russian rescue teams are continuing the search for eight ALROSA miners missing in the Mir underground mine after water flooded into the operation on Friday trapping 142 workers.

Rescuers have brought 133 miners to the surface, according to ALROSA CEO Sergey Ivanov. There were 142 workers underground at the mine at the time of the accident with nine more preparing to descend.

ALROSA has not reported any casualties.

The water flooded into the mine shaft from an open-cast mine above it earlier on Friday.

The Mir mine is in the remote Yakutia region of eastern Siberia, and accounts for 9 percent of ALROSA's gem-quality diamonds.
