Challenging Times: New Candidates in AWDC Elections
June 13, 24(IDEX Online) - Two prominent diamantaires will, for the first time, stand for office in the AWDC (Antwerp World Diamond Centre) elections.
Chirag Shah, CEO of Yashvi Diamonds and Ravi Bhansali, Rosy Blue's managing director, are both among the 13 candidates in the running for six trade positions on the board of directors at the public-private partnership that oversees Belgium's diamond sector.
The election (next Monday and Tuesday, 17 and 18 June) comes at a time of turmoil for both Antwerp and the wider diamond world.
In April, Ari Epstein quit suddenly as AWDC's CEO after 13 years following the introduction of G7 sanctions.
Antwerp's Diamond Office was designated as the sole EU entry point, prompting an angry reaction from traders over delays. He was replaced, for the time being, by AWDC's Karen Rentmeesters (formerly AWDC head of communications).
Chirag Shah, of Yashvi Diamonds, said: "These are indeed challenging times. I am running as a candidate for the first time, as I realize that it is time for action."
Ravi Bhansali, of Rosy Blue, said: "Challenging times demand proactive steps. I am running for the AWDC board to serve the diamond community and help solidify Antwerp's future position in the world diamond trade."
Isidore (Isi) Morsel, CEO of Dali Diamonds, is running for re-election as AWDC president.
