1,094-cts - Lucara Recovers Another Huge Diamond
September 16, 24(IDEX Online) - Lucara yesterday (15 September) announced another huge recovery from its Karowe mine, in Botswana - a 1,094 carat diamond.
It's the sixth +1,000-cts stone since the mine opened in 2012 and comes less than a month after the recovery of a 2,492-carat diamond, the second largest in the world.
Vancouver-based miner said in a statement that it was "very pleased" (it was "ecstatic" at the 2,492-ct recovery).
It said the newly-recoverd stone would be polished by HB Antwerp, as part of an ongoing partnership.
"This remarkable stone bears striking similarities to the 692 carat diamond announced in August 2023, which was polished by HB Antwerp and yielded polished diamonds that sold for in excess of $13m," it said.
William Lamb, president and CEO at Lucara, said: "These continued discoveries of large, high-value diamonds demonstrate the consistent quality of our resource and its ability to deliver substantial returns."
Lucara is currently expanding the Karowe mine to underground operations in a move that should extend its life to 2040 and beyond.
