Botswana's First Olympic Gold Medalist is De Beers Ambassador
January 26, 25IDEX Online) - Letsile Tebogo, Botswana's first ever Olympic gold medal winner, has been appointed a global ambassador for De Beers.
He'll star in Talent Unearthed, a short film series highlighting both the country's athletic talents and the way it has benefitted from natural diamonds. He'll also take part in a series of engagements and media activities.
"Letsile's journey from Botswana to Olympic glory mirrors the transformation of natural diamonds. Just as diamonds are shaped by pressure and time, Letsile's story embodies the spirit of Botswana's progress," said Sandrine Conseiller, CEO of De Beers Brands.
Tebogo, aged 21, won the men's 200 meters at last year's Paris Olympics, with a time of 19.46 seconds, prompting the government to declare a half-day holiday in his honor.
Tebogo said: "My success story is connected with our nation's diamond heritage. The very resources that built our schools and sports facilities have paved the way for young athletes like me.
"I'm humbled that an organisation like De Beers that has played such a pivotal role in the development of my country sees it fit to play a role in my future too, and I'm excited to work with De Beers to highlight the power of natural diamonds for our country and its people."
