A white 47 carat diamond worth an estimated 6 million euros ($7.37 million) and a blue 15.74 carats diamond worth 5.5 million euros ($6.75 million) were taken from the jewelry case after Chopard employees manning the case left it unguarded.
While one report said the display case was forced open during the "Antiquary’s Biennial" (the Antique Dealers Biennial), another report claimed there was no sign of a forced break in.
"There was neither any alarm system nor any surveillance camera," a police spokesman said. However the museum is heavily secured, using surveillance cameras that might have caught the thief in action.
The diamonds were on show in a hall in the underground shopping arcade at the Louvre, outside the museum's art galleries.
