Moscow Prosecutor Closes Embezzlement Case Against Alrosa

The Moscow Public Prosecutor’s Office told Alrosa it is clearing it of criminal charges, ending an investigation started in May. The Public Prosecutor investigated Alrosa's financial activities amid suspicions of embezzlement made by a former senior manager.

The investigation officially closed in early August, but was announced only yesterday.

The Russian daily Kommersant named Gamlet Akopyan, former head of Alrosa’s legal department, as the executive who reported the embezzlement.

Alrosa all along declared there was no wrongdoing, saying its economic and financial activities were “under constant control by relevant authorities”, and that it had been the subject of three audits by the Russian Federation Audit Chamber in the past two years.

Alrosa said the Prosecutor’s Office made a “detailed examination of all the circumstances pertaining to this case,” after it provided all the necessary information to conduct the investigation.

The diamond miner added that not only that it “conducts its activities in strict compliance with the laws of the Russian federation,” but that it reserves the right to take legal action to protect its business reputation from any “hostile attacks”.
