Lucara Names World's Second Biggest Diamond
December 19, 24(IDEX Online) - Lucara has announced a name for its 2,488-carat diamond - the world's second biggest - which was recovered in Botswana in August.
It will be known as Motswedi, which means a water spring or the flow of underground water that emerges to the surface offering life and vitality, in Setswana, the local language in Botswana.
The name was chosen from 39,000 entries in a competition to name the stone. The winner will receive a 100,000 pula ($7,250) prize.
Motswedi (pictured) which was detected at the Karowe mine, in Botswana using X-ray Transmission (XRT) technology, is second in size only to the iconic 3,106-carat Cullinan, discovered in 1905 at the Premier Mine, South Africa.
A 1,094-carat diamond, recovered weeks later at the same mine by Luaca, was named Seriti in the same competition. The word means aura or presence in Setswana.
Canada-based Lucara says it is still considering sale options for both stones.
